Blomfontein Dairy Farm – Hybrid Solar System
Blomfontein Dairy Farm in Mossel Bay/George installed a 90 kVA AC-coupled hybrid solar system with a 113.5 kWp solar array and 100 kWh LiFePO4 battery storage to protect milk production and refrigeration against load-shedding while cutting electricity and diesel costs.

The challenge
Load-shedding and escalating electricity tariffs threatened milk production, refrigeration, and overall operational continuity at Blomfontein Dairy Farm. The farm required a dependable energy solution to reduce high grid electricity and diesel generator costs while safeguarding daily dairy operations.
The SSS solution
Specialized Solar Systems installed a 90 kVA AC-coupled hybrid solar energy system combining a 113.5 kWp solar PV array (61.8 kWp rooftop and 51.7 kWp ground-mounted) with 100 kWh of LiFePO4 battery storage. Power conversion is managed by six 15 kVA Victron Quattro inverters (90 kVA total) and three 27 kVA Fronius grid-tie inverters (81 kVA total), delivering seamless AC/DC-coupled integration across solar, battery, and grid supply.
Results and benefits
The system ensures continuous, dependable power for refrigeration and critical dairy equipment. The installation cuts CO2 emissions by an estimated 43.92 tons annually, features planned future capacity expansion, and achieves an estimated payback period within 6 years.
