Wilderness Spar – Grid-tied Solar
Wilderness SPAR in the Western Cape installed a 170 kWp rooftop solar array with a 150 kVA grid-tied system, reducing daytime electricity costs and enabling approved export of excess solar energy to the municipal grid.

The challenge
As a 24/7 retail outlet, Wilderness Spar faced high daytime energy demand and rising electricity costs. The store required a solution to significantly reduce grid consumption while maintaining continuous operations.
The SSS solution
Specialized Solar Systems installed a large-scale 150 kVA grid-tied solar PV system. The solution features a 163.8 kWp rooftop solar array designed to maximize solar generation during peak daytime hours.
Results and benefits
The daytime solar generation successfully offsets a significant portion of the store’s grid electricity consumption. Additionally, the SSEG-approved system enables excess solar energy to be exported back to the municipal grid.
