Steyn Safaris’s 10kVa 7.92kWp hybrid solar system
Specialized Solar Systems in George partnered with Specialized Energy Solutions in order to enlarge the company’s footprint to the Northern Cape.
Specialized Solar Systems in George has partnered with Specialized Energy Solutions represented by Johan Vermeulen in order to enlarge the footprint of the company in the Northern Cape.
What started out as a friendly visit with an old friend, quickly changed into a reconfiguration of his newly acquired solar system, as well as the installation of other Victron products supplied by Specialized Solar Systems.
Steyn Safaris had a new system installed in January 2019 from another supplier, however, he was not happy with the performance of the system at all.
After consultation, the team at Specialized Solar Systems visited the customer and proposed some changes in order to meet the customers’ original mandate and make the solar system more efficient.
Replacing everything except the batteries, Specialized Solar Systems updated the following hardware components for Steyn Safaris:
- 1 x Victron Quattro 48/10 000 Inverter
- 2 x 150/100 Victron MPPT’s
- 1 x Victron BMV 700 Precision battery monitor
- 1 x Color Control
- 28 x 170AH Narada VRLA batteries (existing)
- 4 x 220AH Narada VRLA batteries (existing)
- 24 x 330W PV Solar Panels
Now with a 10kVa 7.92kWp hybrid solar system with a battery capacity of 65KW.
Steyn Safaris existing solar system only afforded them backup during power failures, whereas the re-configured solar system now provides 67% of his total daily energy consumption, including backup power for an additional 10 hours during load shedding.
Current power generation is based on a very low irradiation factor for June, whereas from August there would be enough Photovoltaic generation in order to completely be off the grid, subject to battery capacity and load shedding reserve.
Alternatively, should the geysers be removed from the current system it will have a substantial impact on the available energy stored in the batteries for other loads.
Substantial savings on electricity each month are to affect as well to the benefit of the customer.
Further new installations are imminent to the addition of the re-configuration.

Some key advantages of Hybrid solar systems supplied and installed by Specialized Solar Systems:
- If the power generated by PV solar arrays is inadequate to supply daytime loads as well as charge your batteries, the system can recharge your batteries from the grid when generally a lower off-peak electricity rate is applied.
- When electricity usage goes above a certain level nationally, the grid supply may charge you at a higher rate for the increased level of demand. Hybrid systems can provide ‘peak lopping’ where some of the stored power can be drawn from the batteries to help balance power usage.
- If your grid connection does not have the capacity to supply the required load, a hybrid solar system will supplement any extra power. This may allow you to avoid a costly mains upgrade to your property.
Hybrid solar systems empower you with energy security, self-sufficiency, and lock in your future cost of electricity, control when you use your solar power, and provide an uninterrupted power supply.

The utility grid is a virtual battery
Electricity should be used as it is generated. However, it can be temporarily stored as other forms of energy (e.g. chemical energy in batteries). Energy storage typically comes with significant costs.
The electric power grid is in many ways also a battery, without the need for maintenance or replacements, and with much better efficiency rates. In other words, more electricity (and more money) goes to waste with conventional battery systems.
Additional perks of being grid-tied include access to backup power from the utility grid in case extra power is required or if your solar system stops generating electricity for any reason. At the same time, you also help to mitigate the utility’s peak load.
Customers can contact Specialized Solar Systems for more information on purchasing a Grid-Tied solar system and for expert advice when choosing the correct solar system solution for all their electrical energy needs.
Feeding-in to the Municipal Grid information (Western Cape, South Africa)
Many municipalities across the Western Cape already have the rules and tariffs in place for feeding into the grid when installing a PV system.
