Genevafontein Retirement Village – Hybrid Solar System
Genevafontein Retirement Village in George installed a hybrid solar system featuring a 38.8 kWp PV array, 45 kVA Victron Quattro inverters, 27 kVA Fronius grid-tie inverter, and 60 kWh LiFePO4 battery storage to replace costly diesel generation and secure continuous operations for its frail care facility.

The challenge
Rising electricity tariffs and vulnerable frail care operations made costly diesel generation unsustainable for Genevafontein Retirement Village. The village, comprising 91 residential units, a Community Centre, and a Frail Care facility, required a reliable, cost-effective energy solution to replace backup generators and secure continuous operations.
The SSS solution
Specialized Solar Systems engineered and installed an AC-coupled hybrid solar solution featuring a 38.8 kWp rooftop solar PV array and 60 kWh of LiFePO4 battery storage. Power conversion is managed by 45 kVA of Victron Quattro hybrid inverters alongside a 27 kVA Fronius grid-tie inverter, enabling seamless switchover between solar, battery, and grid supply.
Results and benefits
The system cuts CO2 emissions by 6.74 tons annually while delivering long lifespan performance and high operational security for vulnerable frail care operations. The project achieves an estimated payback period within 6 years.
