After 11 long years of waiting for electricity, Mfundiso Mabana is a happy man thanks to DC microgrid technology
On Wednesday 16 November a miracle happened in Sedgefield. Not a major, thunder-flashing miracle that would make national headlines, in fact, many folks might not consider it a miracle at all. But it was to Goodman Mbana and his family.
It was the miracle of light.
In Barkly’s West near Sedgefield, the Garden Route in South Africa, two people have occupied a tiny dark shack for many years! Their lives changed dramatically with the arrival and quick installation of the first SSS DC micro-grid system in the area – a gift of light and a real blessing from Specialized Solar Systems.
This houses electrical system runs with solar primarily supplying the system with 9kW/hours per day. In simple terms, they have 10kWhrs per day via solar and wind input if the battery levels start to run low a 5kW Victron inverter will switch over to Eskom power before the batteries lifespan can be affected.

120KWH/60KVA BOSCO Back-up and Peak Shaving System
12 x Redflow ZBM 2 (240kg – 10kWh per battery) batteries in conjunction with 6 x 10KVA Victron Inverter Chargers, ( 20KVA Per Phase)were installed at BOSCO printed circuits to assist with load shedding and also peak shaving in Edenvale, Gauteng Province, South Africa. The Victron energy system will be running a Hub2 System with 3x 17KVA SMA Grid-tie Inverters connected to the output of the Victron Quattro inverters.
