Important Notice: Tariff Changes for SSEG Customers Effective from July 2024

tariff notice change

Please take note of the tariff changes that came into effect the 1st of July 2024. SSEG single phase customers will NO longer be required to upgrade their capacity to at least 40 Amps. They can keep their 20 or 30 Amps if they wish and will pay the fixed monthly charges associated with that capacity as shown below (page 32 of the George 2024/25 Council approved tariff book).

Domestic consumers: 1 or 3 phase Capacity From 20 Amps single phase

Basic charge: R96.61 per month
Capacity charge: R8.88 per Amp per phase per month
Energy Charge: R269. 89 cents per kWh

  • The capacity of circuit breakers can be selected in steps of 10 Amps from 20 to 80 Amps 1 phase and in steps ol 10 Amps from 20 Amps up to 3 x 80 Amps for 3 phase. The capacity can be increase beyond 60A with special permission from the Director: Electrotechnical Services.
lectricity deposits will be applicable to all non-prepayment meters.
  • Please note though, that the maximum SSEG (inverter size) that a customer can install is dependent on their service connection as calculated below. This is based on the National Standard NRS 097-2-3 requirement, so we cannot deviate from it (see downloadable documents)

20 Amps single phase = 20A230V/1000 = 4,6 kVA, therefore a maximum of 5 kVA inverter will be permitted 30 Amps single phase = 30A230V/1000 = 6,9 kVA, therefore a maximum of 8 kVA inverter will be permitted.
40 Amps single phase = 40A230V/1000 = 9,2 kVA, therefore a maximum of 10 kVA inverter will be permitted 50 Amps single phase = 50A230V/1000 = 11,5 kVA, therefore a maximum of 12 kVA inverter will be permitted.
60 Amps single phase = 60A*230V/1000 = 13,8 kVA, therefore a maximum of 15 kVA inverter will be permitted.

So if you are a 20 Amps customer and want to put up an 8 kVA inverter, you would need to apply for the capacity upgrade.

Lastly, the municipal Town Planning department requires building plans for all solar installations before permission to install the system can be issued.

Thank you,
