The solar system was designed and installed by Specialized Solar Systems with 128kWh useable storage capacity, a 90kWp solar array (PV), 3 x 27kVA (81kVA) Fronius grid-tied inverters (used for their MPPTs/Grid-tied features) and 6 x 15kVA Victron Quattro inverters/chargers used for both charging batteries and energy distribution.

The system is designed solely for the farms’ use to lower electricity expenditure during the day and night, and to overcome the Eskom rising tariffs charges saving money in the more economical time of use periods.
It features a 90kWp solar array which provides the energy to reduce the farm daytime power costs (running of irrigation pumps etc) and to charge the batteries for use during the late afternoon milking of the cows. The solar array will produce on average 410kWh per day.

The solar array is coupled with 3 x 27kVA Fronius 3-phase commercial inverters. The AC coupled is also connected to 6 x 15kVA Victron Quatro inverters-chargers used to charge the storage. The storage capacity is delivered by 2 x 80/64 Freedom Won batteries giving a total of 128kWh of useable energy.

The use of the 6 x 15kVA Victron inverter/chargers creates scheduled charging of the batteries during the low tariff period between 23h00 until 04h00. The tariff during this time is low (90c/kWhr) and the batteries are then discharged during the early morning milking when the tariff is very high (R 4.20/kWhr).

How does a grid-tie solar power system work?

A grid-connected inverter converts DC electricity produced by the solar panels into AC electricity, which can then be used by the property/household. If a grid connect system is producing more power than is being consumed, the surplus is fed into the mains power grid (if your municipality allows). Alternatively, when there is no solar panel generation or if inadequate, the inverter will allow grid-power to compensation.

Advantages of Grid-Tie Systems

  • A grid-connection will allow you to save more money with solar panels through better efficiency rates and lower equipment and installation costs. Batteries and other stand-alone equipment are required for a fully functional off-grid solar system. This adds to costs as well as maintenance. Grid-tied solar systems are generally much cheaper and also simpler to install.
  • Homeowners can also put excess electricity back onto the utility grid instead of storing it themselves with batteries. This is done with special meters (if allowed in your area).

The utility grid is a virtual battery

110kVA 430kWh/day Grid-Tied solar power system with 100kWp solar array installation at Mungo Mills

The Specialized Solar Systems commercial solar installation team is currently busy with a grid-tied solar system. The system is 110 kVA with a 100 kWp solar array that will deliver an average solar yield of 430 kWh per day. The grid-tied solar system is being installed at Mungo Mills at Old Nick Village (Plettenberg Bay) in the Western Cape, South Africa.

Designed by Specialized Solar Systems, this commercial grid-tie solar system consisted of:

  • 1 x 110kVA Solis inverter
  • 250 x 400-watt PV solar panels (100kWp)
  • Solis Inverter has 10 x built-in MPPT’s

This commercial grid-tie solar system is connected to the Bitou Municipality 300/5 CTs (current transformer). This allows the excess energy to supply Old Nick Village with power.

This installation should take the commercial solar installation team five weeks to complete.

About the Eden Festival of Action 2019:

As the world around us is changing faster than expected, we aim to provide the tools to grow with it. Our program is centered around getting active (not anxious) about the future of our planet! We have a world-class team of experienced facilitators and environmental experts curating the experience from start to finish. Attendees will stay in a tented village, fostering a new community throughout the week. Every day you will have time to learn in our various eco-workshops and get active by planting trees, doing alien clearing, or greening local communities. We also facilitate yoga and movement, creative sessions, and upcycling. We encourage unplugging, finding headspace, and engaging with the natural environment. 

This year the United Nations General Assembly declared 2021 – 2030 the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration. Studies say that restoration could remove up to 26 gigatons of greenhouse gases from the atmosphere and that Ecosystem restoration is fundamental to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals, mainly those on climate change, poverty eradication, food security, water, and biodiversity conservation. We aim to plant over 4500 indigenous trees on the Garden Route at the 2019 Festival of Action.

The festival is a three-week program, with the first two weeks dedicated to high school students and the last week open to adults. Incorporating tree-planting, alien vegetation clearing, environmental workshops and talks, natural building, collaborative eco-art pieces and murals, and community upliftment work.
