Welcome to Specialized Solar Systems: Your Guide to Going Solar in South Africa.

Are you considering harnessing the power of the sun to meet your energy needs? Specialized Solar Systems is here to guide you through the process of going solar in South Africa, whether it be for residential or commercial. Below, we’ve compiled a set of frequently asked questions (FAQs) to provide you with the essential information you need to make informed decisions about solar energy adoption. Let’s embark on your solar journey together!

Sun availability in South Africa?
  • According to the South African Department of Energy, the whole of Africa has sunshine all year round. The annual 24-hour global solar radiation average is about 220 W/m² for South Africa, compared with about 150 W/m² for parts of the USA, and about 100 W/m² for Europe and the United Kingdom.
  • The sunlight in South Africa is among the best in the world.
How solar power works?

Solar power harnesses the energy from the sun and converts it into electricity. The process involves the use of photovoltaic (PV) cells, also known as solar cells, which are typically made from semiconductor materials such as silicon. Here’s a simplified explanation of how solar power works:

  • Solar Radiation: The sun emits energy in the form of photons. When these photons reach the Earth, they carry energy. Solar panels capture this energy to generate electricity.
  • Photovoltaic Cells: Solar panels consist of multiple photovoltaic cells connected in a specific arrangement. Each cell contains layers of semiconductor material.
  • Photovoltaic Effect: When sunlight strikes the semiconductor material in the solar cells, it excites electrons, causing them to move. This phenomenon is known as the photovoltaic effect.
  • Electric Current Generation: The movement of these excited electrons creates an electric current. The solar cells are connected to create a flow of electrons, generating direct current (DC) electricity.
  • Inverter Conversion: The DC electricity generated by the solar panels is then passed through an inverter, which converts it into alternating current (AC). Most of our electrical devices use AC power.
  • Grid Connection (Optional): The generated electricity can be used on-site for powering homes or businesses. If there’s excess electricity, it can be fed back into the electrical grid, and the owner may receive credits or compensation for the surplus energy.
  • Storage (Optional): Some solar power systems include energy storage solutions, such as batteries. These batteries store excess electricity generated during the day for use during periods when the sun isn’t shining, such as at night.

The efficiency of solar panels can be influenced by factors such as the angle and orientation of the panels, weather conditions such as excessive heat, and the quality of the solar cells. Advances in solar technology continue to improve efficiency and reduce costs, making solar power an increasingly viable and sustainable source of energy.

What is the difference between high and low frequency inverters?

This article delves into the benefits of low-frequency inverters, highlighting their superior performance, durability, and extra features

Inverters are essential for converting DC power to AC power in various applications. When comparing low-frequency and high-frequency inverters, factors like peak power capacity and reliability become crucial.  Whether for off-grid systems or high-energy appliances, understanding these inverter types can guide you to the ideal solution. Low-frequency inverters outshine their high-frequency counterparts, handling power spikes more effectively and sustaining higher levels for longer durations. Their reliability comes from robust transformers, setting them apart from the MOSFETs used in high-frequency inverters. Additionally, low-frequency inverters offer features like built-in battery chargers and UPS functions, making them versatile. They withstand adverse grid conditions and are more easily repairable, offering a cost-effective choice. Although they are larger and heavier, low-frequency inverters are suitable for various applications, including powering kitchen appliances and air conditioners. Despite their higher cost, the long-term reliability of low-frequency inverters justifies the investment, especially when paired with a solar power kit

LOW-FREQUENCY INVERTERS

HIGH-FREQUENCY INVERTERS

Operate using reliable and sturdy power transformers. Operate using electronic switching.
Can operate at a peak power level of 300% of the nominal power level for several seconds. Also operate at a cooler temperature. Can operate at a peak power level of 200% of the nominal power level but only for a small fraction of a second.
Are ideal for inductive loads and run well with high surge loads and higher power spikes.  Are therefore more likely to burn out when driving inductive loads long-term (water pumps, refrigerators, etc.)
Are reliable and stable with strong shock resistance. It has a much lower safety performance.
Do not have a built-in Maximum PowerPoint Tracker (MPPT). Normally, it has a built-in Maximum PowerPoint Tracker (MPPT).
It has a lower efficiency than the HF inverter and the no-load loss is higher.  Have a high conversion efficiency and the no-load loss is low.
Can supply up to double its capacity from the grid. Can only supply equivalent to the inverter capacity from the grid.
Have a wide range of technical features and capabilities. Have less technical features and capabilities than LF inverters.
Remote management system is very effective (GX device). Have an elementary remote management system.
Larger and more bulky due to power transformer. Smaller footprint than the LF inverter, and therefore also weighs less.
More expensive than a high-frequency inverter. Less expensive than low-frequency inverter.
Relatively simple internal structure makes them easy to repair. Due to complex circuitry and many components, they are difficult to repair.
Manufactured in Holland. Manufactured in China.
Generally, carry a 5-year warranty (with optional extended warranties available).  Generally carry a 2-year warranty.
Examples of LF inverters: VICTRON ENERGY Examples of HF inverters: are SUNSYNK, GROWATT, DEYE,
SUNGROW, RCT, MECER.
How much does a solar system for my home cost?

The cost of a solar power system varies based on your energy needs. Whether it’s for backup during load shedding or power cuts, saving on power bills, or achieving energy independence, these factors influence the overall system cost.

If you need assistance:

What is the difference in the type of solar power systems?

When considering solar power systems for your home or business, there are three primary options to choose from:

  • Off-Grid Solar Power System:
If independence from the main electricity grid is your goal, an off-grid solar power system is for you. This setup operates autonomously, free from reliance on the traditional electricity supplier. To ensure continuous power availability, it’s advisable to incorporate solar batteries, storing excess energy for use during periods without direct sunlight.
  • Solar Hybrid Systems:
The solar hybrid system provides a balanced approach. Throughout the day, solar panels generate power to fulfill your energy needs, seamlessly transitioning to the grid during nighttime hours. The inclusion of batteries adds an extra layer of reliability, offering backup power during daytime power outages.
  • Grid-Tied Solar Power System:
Opting for a grid-tied solar system means your setup remains connected to the municipal grid. During sunlight hours, your home runs on solar power, seamlessly switching to municipal power when needed, such as during the night or on cloudy days.

Embarking on your solar power journey involves selecting the system that aligns with your specific energy preferences and requirements. Each type has its advantages, and understanding these distinctions will empower you to make an informed choice for a sustainable energy future in your home or business.

Will a solar system increase my property value?
  • Absolutely! Having a solar system boosts your property’s value. It’s a valuable asset, particularly in a country like South Africa, where it helps eliminate inconveniences, especially during load shedding. Secures your energy costs and ensures energy independence.
What if my roof isn’t good for solar PV panels?

If your roof isn’t good for solar panels, here are two simple options:

  • Ground-Mounted Solar: Put the solar panels on the ground in an open area on your property. This way, you can position them better for more sunlight.
  • Solar Carports or Canopies: Install solar panels on structures like carports. These not only give shade to vehicles but also produce solar energy. If you have space for a carport, it’s a good-looking and practical solution.
What is data logging and why consider it?
