The facility upholds high standards of cleanliness and animal welfare, ensuring that the cattle are healthy and well cared for. Braams Farm took a major step toward energy independence with an advanced containerized embedded solar generator, installed by Specialized Solar Systems’ (SSS) commercial division. The AC-DC coupled hybrid solar system designed by the team provides a sustainable, cost-effective, and uninterrupted energy supply solution, supporting the farm’s operations with reliable power.

Braams Farm faced rising electricity costs due to high energy consumption, grid dependency, and vulnerability to power outages, necessitating a reliable, long-term energy solution with financial viability and a reduced carbon footprint. Specialized Solar Systems provided a hybrid AC/DC-coupled solar system, integrating optimized solar panel placement to minimize losses, high-performance Victron and Fronius inverters, and advanced battery backup for peak demand, load shedding, and night-time use. The system enables efficient energy management through remote monitoring via Victron VRM and Fronius web platforms, ensuring optimal performance and sustainability.

Biotek Industrial Park: Harnessing the Power of the Sun

Biotek Industrial Park in George faced soaring energy costs and heavy grid reliance. Specialized Solar Systems Commercial team came up with a grid-tie solar solution.

Our commercial team installed a powerful 504.9 kWp grid-tie system, featuring 3 SUN2000 115 kTL Huawei inverters. The 504.9 kWp rooftop solar arrays should produce an average of 810.8 MWh of energy annually. The results? Lower energy expenses, a 2–3 year payback period, and 702.5 tons of CO₂ saved yearly.

Commercial Solar Power Solutions: Securing Energy Independence for Garden Route Eye Clinic and George Surgical Centre

In today’s world, the demand for sustainable and efficient energy solutions is paramount. Solar power has emerged as a viable and environmentally friendly alternative to traditional energy sources. Garden Route Eye Clinic and George Surgical Centre, two prominent health institutions in the region, have taken a significant step towards a greener future by implementing commercial solar power solutions with the help of Specialized  Solar Systems.

These innovative installations are not only reducing energy costs but also contributing to a healthier planet and promoting energy independence.

By incorporating cutting-edge technology from leading brands like Victron and Fronius, these healthcare facilities have harnessed the power of the sun to meet their energy needs. The integration of lithium batteries ensures reliable and efficient storage, providing backup power during load shedding and optimizing energy usage.

Dual Systems for Dual Benefits

There are two separate solar power systems designed and installed for Garden Route Eye Clinic (GREC) and George Surgical Centre (GSC).GREC is equipped with a 3-phase, 45kVA system featuring our very own Energydock Energypod, while GSC has a larger 3-phase, 135kVA system with our very own Storagedock LV-comms stackable batteries. Both systems utilize Victron Quattro’s and Fronius Eco inverters to manage power from Jinko solar panels and store excess energy in LiFPO4 batteries for backup.

Responding to Load Shedding

When both health facilities approached Specialized Solar Systems (SSS) for an energy solution, South Africa was experiencing unprecedented load shedding. Stage 6 load shedding meant disruptions to critical medical services. For these facilities, reliable backup power is essential. Traditionally, this meant relying on diesel generators, but with skyrocketing fuel prices, this solution became increasingly expensive.

Independent Needs, Independent Systems

SSS, a solar power solution provider, commercial team conducted independent energy audits for both GREC and GSC. Each facility has separate electrical infrastructure and operates independently. This analysis determined the specific energy requirements of each location.

Designing for Resilience

Given the critical nature of medical facilities and the prevailing load shedding situation, SSS designed each system with battery storage capacity sufficient to carry the facility through a 4-hour power outage. The battery capacity for GREC is 45kVA 60kWh and for GSC it’s 135kVA 180kWh.

Adapting to Changing Energy Landscape

Since the project’s completion, South Africa’s energy environment has improved, with load shedding currently less frequent. This positive change allows for a more sophisticated approach to battery management.

Optimizing Savings Through Time-of-Use Tariffs

Both facilities operate on Time-of-Use (TOU) electricity tariffs, where the cost of electricity fluctuates based on peak and off-peak periods. SSS can now program the battery charge and discharge cycles to take advantage of these fluctuations. This “arbitrage process” further reduces energy costs and improves the financial viability of the installed solar systems.

Future-Proofing for Growth

The design also considered future expansion plans. A new building is under construction at GSC, with a second phase of the solar power system planned to accommodate the increased energy needs. This phase will add a further 90kVA capacity.

Retrofitting and Aesthetics

The entire system, encompassing both phases, was designed to seamlessly integrate with the existing facilities. This included retrofitting solar panels onto existing roof space and constructing a dual-function solar carport structure. This structure provides shade for visitor parking while accommodating a significant number of solar modules to meet the total energy needs of both facilities.

Meeting Client Objectives

From the outset, the primary goals for both GREC and GSC were energy security, energy independence, and cost savings. These goals encompassed reducing reliance on municipal electricity and minimizing diesel generator running costs. SSS designed the systems with these objectives in mind, while also collaborating with the clients to ensure a visually pleasing integration with the facility grounds.

Operational Success

Both the 135kVA system for GSC and the 45kVA system for GREC are now fully operational. The solar arrays generate sufficient energy to meet the daytime load and charge the batteries during daylight hours. The batteries then discharge during peak tariff periods, significantly reducing electricity costs. Additionally, a secondary charge cycle is scheduled for off-peak hours, further optimizing energy usage.

The successful implementation of solar power systems at Garden Route Eye Clinic and George Surgical Center demonstrates a commitment to sustainable practices and a brighter future. These initiatives not only benefit the institutions themselves but also set an example for others in the community to follow. In April 2024, a beacon of hope shone upon the Zone 3 informal settlement of George, Thembalethu, as the Thembalethu AC Solar Electrification Pilot Project brought light and dignity to 13 households. Led by Specialized Solar Systems (SSS) in collaboration with the George Municipality, MDL Electrical and Clinkscale Maughan-Brown, this initiative has done more than just provide electricity; it has transformed lives.

Before the project, many residents faced the dangers of illegal electrical connections or lived in isolating darkness. Now, thanks to the innovative EnergyPod, these households are powered by the sun. The EnergyPod, a remotely managed system, captures solar energy, stores it in powerful batteries, and efficiently distributes power through overhead lines to each electrified household.

The result? Homes are illuminated, televisions are powered, devices are charged, and even the pathways are lit with overhead street lights that shine bright at night.

Recently, George Executive Mayor Jackie von Brandis, accompanied by Cllrs. T. Qatana, S. Toto, B. Johnson, and D. Gultig, visited the project site. She praised the initiative for its profound impact on the community, describing it as a visionary solution to the energy crisis affecting many underserved areas. Mayor von Brandis emphasized the project’s potential to significantly enhance the quality of life for those most in need.

Six months into its operation, the project has exceeded expectations, with zero downtime—even in midwinter—and widespread satisfaction among residents. The transformation is evident: homes once cloaked in darkness are now brightly lit, providing a sense of security and allowing residents to be productive well into the evening. Simple tasks, like charging a mobile phone, are now effortless, fostering communication and opening doors to income-generating opportunities.

Reliable electricity has become a gateway to education and empowerment. Children now study under proper lighting, using smart devices to access educational resources, potentially boosting their academic performance. Families are staying connected to the world, with access to news, entertainment, and information broadening their horizons and providing much-needed relaxation. The ability to refrigerate food has improved health outcomes, and appliances once out of reach are now powering small businesses, further contributing to the community’s economic well-being.

The benefits extend beyond individual homes. Streetlights have transformed the neighborhood, enhancing safety and fostering a greater sense of security within the community. There have been zero incidents of theft or tampering with the solar system, a testament to the community’s ownership and pride in the project.

Expansion Plans

Looking ahead, the project’s expansion plans aim to bring even more life-changing amenities to the community. The introduction of hot water geysers will provide residents with reliable access to warm water, greatly improving daily living conditions. Excess energy generation will ensure that power is not only sufficient for current needs but can be stored or redirected for future use, making the system even more resilient. Appliance allocation will be strategically managed to optimize energy use and empower residents with the tools they need for better livelihoods.

Furthermore, the integration of blockchain technology will revolutionize the way energy is distributed and managed, ensuring transparency and efficiency in the billing and consumption processes. Additionally, the introduction of Wi-Fi access will bridge the digital divide, allowing residents to connect with the broader world, access online education, and explore new opportunities for economic growth.

Sustainability and Affordability

The Thembalethu project also shows strong potential for long-term financial sustainability. The components, designed for longevity—20+ years for solar panels and 6,000 cycles for batteries—coupled with low maintenance requirements, point to a future where clean energy is both sustainable and affordable. The remote monitoring and self-regulation features ensure minimal upkeep, allowing the community to focus on reaping the benefits of their new energy source.

As this initiative continues to grow, it stands as a powerful testament to the transformative power of renewable energy, offering sustainable and affordable electricity to communities living on the margins of society. With the planned expansions, the project is set to further elevate the quality of life for Thembalethu’s residents, driving progress and hope in this vibrant community.

Innovative Technology and Versatile Deployment

Combining photovoltaic (PV) energy generation with prime lithium iron phosphate storage cells and low frequency Victron inverters, the Energydock Energy Pod is swift to deploy and requires minimal space. It can function as a standalone energy service, a grid-supported system, or a grid-assisted service. Each Energy Pod is remotely managed and programmed to meet specific energy requirements.

Developed and manufactured in South Africa, the Energy Pod is available in a standard range of single phase units (15kVA, 20kVA and 30kVA) and three phase units (15kVA, 24kVA, 30kVA and 45kVA), equipped with low frequency Victron inverters and modular battery storage. The Energy Pod can also be custom designed and built to support specific energy requirements and load profiles.

The Energy Pod draws energy from various sources like nearby solar panels, high-voltage DC distribution lines, generators, or limited grid supply. The system intelligently stores or distributes energy based on programmed priorities.

The optional PV Add-On kits offer a complete PV solution, including solar panels and all the required equipment and protection, which will be installed inside the Energy Pod before it leaves the factory. The panel mounting framework and cables are, however, excluded as these are site specific.

Encased in a high-end steel enclosure, the Energy Pod prioritizes equipment security. All the required equipment is installed inside the Energy Pod. It offers two levels of access: one for local technicians and another for specialist engineers, as well as a security alarm warning of unauthorised entry.

  • When connected solely to a client’s generator or solar array, the Energy Pod functions as an off-grid system. Generated energy is stored in lithium iron phosphate batteries for night time use. If energy supply falls short, the system can be programmed to automatically activate the generator.

Hybrid Energy Pod with Grid-Tie Functionality

  • Connected to the main grid, the Energy Pod operates as a hybrid system, integrating renewable energy into the network. NERSA-approved inverters can supply daytime loads and feed excess energy back to the grid if permitted. The system’s power assist function enables it to enhance limited grid capacity points. Remote management allows for efficient scheduling and control.

Unlimited Power Supply (UPS) Functionality

  • The Energy Pod can support both essential and non-essential loads during grid failures. The system has dual load outputs (AC1 and AC2). AC1 output (connected to the essential loads) remains active regardless of grid conditions, while as a default setting, the AC2 output (connected to the non-essential loads) operates only when the grid or generator is active. As a custom setting, however, the inverter can be programmed to support the non-essential loads (AC2 output) via the battery.

Decentralized Energy Distribution (custom design)

  • The Energy Pod facilitates the first step towards decentralized utility systems, allowing customized designs tailored to specific site requirements. For this function, it can feature a central meter and up to ten sub-meters, ensuring efficient energy distribution and management, according to customer needs.

The Victron Quattro inverters play a crucial role in maintaining a pure sine wave output, safeguarding machinery from power anomalies.

  • Energy is stored using our new stackable architecture battery, the Storagedock LV-COM. This lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) battery design allows for effective transportation and ease of installation.
  • Important Terminology:
  • A module is an individual 15 kWh battery unit.
  • A stack is a number of modules connected in parallel (up to 6 units) and positioned on top of each other, with a foot piece and a BMU at the very top, forming a battery stack.
