101 kWp Grid-Tied Solar Power System -Geelhoutboom
Specialized Solar Systems installation team is busy with the installation of a large 101 kWp Grid-Tied solar power system that will supplement the energy usage for the new upgraded blueberry pack house at the Highfields Blue Berry Pack House, just a few kilometers outside George, on the Garden Route, South Africa
The 100kVA Grid-tied solar power system makes use of the following primary hardware components to generate solar power:
- 332 x 305-watt solar PV modules (101260WP)
- 4 x 27.0 ECO Fronius Grid-tied inverters
The Grid-Tied solar system is designed, supplied, and implemented by the Specialized Solar Systems commercial solar team in collaboration with our solar partner, SSK (Sentraal Suid Ko-operasie).
This system connects the solar panel installation with the main electricity grid (ESKOM) and is known as a grid-tied solar power system. It is essentially used to supplement the facilitiy’s grid-power electricity demand with solar power generation.

Feeding into the Municipal Grid
Many municipalities across the Western Cape already have the rules and tariffs in place for feeding into the grid when installing a PV system. To view more information, please view this link
A grid-tied solar-powered electrical system is also known as a tied-to-the-grid, or grid-tie system and is a semi-autonomous electrical generation or grid energy storage system.
Background: Specialized Solar Systems Grid Tie solar powered system
How does a grid-tie solar power system work?
A grid-connected inverter converts DC electricity produced by the solar panels into AC electricity, which can then be used by the property/household. If a grid-connected system is producing more power than is being consumed, the surplus is fed into the main power grid (if your municipality allows it).
Advantages of Grid-Tie Systems
- A grid connection will allow you to save more money with solar panels through better efficiency rates and lower equipment and installation costs. Batteries and other stand-alone equipment are required for a fully functional off-grid solar system. This adds to costs as well as maintenance. Grid-tied solar systems are generally much cheaper and simpler to install.
- Homeowners can also put excess electricity back onto the utility grid instead of storing it themselves with batteries. This is done with special meters (if allowed in your area).
