Sonkrag gaan van Saterdag ingespan word om te help voorsien in die elektrisiteitsbehoeftes van ’n groot winkelsentrum in George, Thembalethu Square.

Sover bekend, is dit die eerste groot private onderneming in die Suid-Kaap wat sonkrag gaan gebruik.

Die George-lughawe, wat deur die Lughawensmaatskappy van Suid-Afrika (Acsa) bedryf word, gebruik reeds sedert Februarie sonkrag.

Die sonpale by Thembalethu Square is op die dak van die winkelsentrum aangebring. Specialized Solar Systems is die kontrakteurs van die projek. Die maatskappy is een van die leiers op dié gebied.

Die aanvoerwerk is reeds in Mei vanjaar gedoen en die projek is onlangs voltooi.

Jeanne-Mari Scholtz, die sentrumbestuurder, sê die sentrum is in September 2012 in gebruik geneem. In die eerste twee jaar van die sentrum se bestaan het dit swaar getrek, maar die afgelope twee jaar het dit baie gegroei.

Die idee om sonkrag te gebruik, het van die eienaars gekom. Hulle het in sonkrag belang gestel en wou vasstel hoe dit tot besparings kan lei.

Navorsing is gedoen en daar is gekyk hoe volhoubaar dit by die sentrum ingestel kan word.

Samesprekings is ook met die munisipaliteit en ander belanghebbendes gevoer.

In die navorsing het verskeie faktore aandag gekry, soos hoeveel sonlig op ’n spesifieke tyd by die sentrum beskikbaar is.

Die koste van die projek beloop sowat R4,4 miljoen en daar word gehoop dat dit op lang termyn sowat R35 000 per maand op die sentrum se elektrisiteitsrekening kan bespaar.

645 sonpanele is aangebring en dit sal 1 040 kWh per dag kan opwek.

Scholtz benadruk dat die sonpanele nie in al die elektrisiteitsbehoeftes gaan voorsien nie. Dit sal die elektrisiteit wat die sentrum van die munisipaliteit koop, aanvul.

Die plan is om die projek later uit te brei en moontlik batterye te installeer. Van die opgewekte sonkrag sal dan in die batterye gestoor kan word.

Volgens Scholtz is dit skoon energie. Dit hou verskeie voordele in. Dit verminder onder meer die vrystelling van koolstofdioksied in die atmosfeer.

Daar word ook gehoop om met die projek uiteindelik geld te bespaar wat dan weer teruggeploeg kan word in die gemeenskap.

Die projek verhoog ook die kapitaalwaarde van die sentrum.
